Pendant Light Hanging Height: A Simple Room-by-Room Guide

Merchant: Pelvera Circle • Mumbai, Maharashtra • Support: checkout@pelveracircle.shop

Why height matters so much

Hanging height affects both how a pendant looks and how well it lights the space. Too high and the light scatters weakly; too low and it blocks views or dazzles the eyes. A few centimetres make a surprising difference.

Over a dining table

Hang the bottom of the pendant about 75–90 cm above the tabletop. This pools light on the table and creates an intimate feel without people knocking their heads or losing eye contact across the table.

Over a kitchen island

Aim for roughly 75–85 cm above the counter. With multiple pendants, space them evenly along the island and keep their bottoms at the same level for a clean line.

In living rooms and walkways

Where people walk underneath, keep the bottom of the pendant at least 2.1 metres (7 feet) from the floor so no one ducks. For accent pendants not over a surface, prioritise this clearance.

Beside the bed

Bedside pendants are a lovely alternative to table lamps. Hang them so the bottom sits around 50–60 cm above the mattress, or at a comfortable reading height for you when sitting up.

Adjust for ceiling height

These are starting points. For high ceilings, you can hang a touch lower; for low ceilings, keep pendants higher and choose compact designs so the room doesn't feel cramped.
